Used as a dye intermediate for the production of vanillin, azo dyes and triphenylmethane dyes. It can also be used as a solvent, stabilizer, analytical reagent, etc.

When heated, it decomposes to produce highly toxic fumes of aniline and nitrogen oxides. It reacts with oxidizing agents.
